nubbsgalore:

photos by matt smith from the Illawarra coast in new south wales of bluebottles, violet snails and blue dragons.

despite its resemblance to the jellyfish, the bluebottle is more closely related to coral. known as a zooid, the bluebottle (or portugese man of war) is a colonial animal composed of many highly specialized and physiologically integrated individual organisms incapable of independent survival.

the blue dragon — a type of nudibranch, here no larger than a thumbnail, with its own potent sting — is able to eat the nematocysts (stinging cells) of the bluebottle without discharging them and internally relocate them to the tips of each one of the fingers you can see in the pictures.

for their part, the violet snails also feed on the bluebottles.

notes matt, “despite their potentially dangerous sting, the bluebottle is an amazingly beautiful creature. with strong winds, hundreds of these cnidaria are blown into the bays around my home town and trapped overnight.”

this allows him to capture the above shots, which he creates with use of a fluorescent tube in his strobe light and a homemade waterproof lens dome.

Once more about how much I dislike the words DFAB and DMAB

notfuckingcishet:

One of the things I dislike about terms like DFAB and DMAB (besides a lot of issues I’ve already talked about in the past) is that it’s used as an ‘easy fix’ when talking about complex issues where it would really be much clearer to describe what’s really relevant. This brings gender into topics where gender has no place.

Talking about people who can get pregnant? ‘People with ovaries and a uterus’ is much more inclusive and doesn’t involve an F for ‘female’ (which is pretty hurtful to people who’ve spend a long time breaking free from the label ‘female’.

Talking about dresses and lingerie designed for bodies with broader shoulders and smaller breasts? Describe that shit. No need to bring the M for ‘male’ into any descriptions here (again: hurtful).

Talking about people who can grow a full beard? Describe that or describe ‘People who have spend a significant part of their teen/adult life with high testosterone levels’.

These descriptions are all longer and take more time to write but don’t have the very problematic aspects that DFAB and DMAB have. And super important: they remind us of the limited relevance of gender. They remind us that regular things like pregnancy, dresses and beards do not need to be categorized according to gender or some bullshit notion like ‘biological sex’.

Grouping all people as neither ‘DFAB’ or ‘DMAB’ isn’t progressive and doesn’t deconstruct the gender binary. It’s getting back to labeling everyone ‘female’ or ‘male’ by a different route.

hinokaxylo said: I think you should honestly leave Laci alone. She is really doing a good job, and your picking on her and nitpicking all the things she says. She apologizes constantly for things, personally, I don't think she should have to excuse. I think you should think about the position she's in. Her internet popularity, makes her more inclined to have people say that what she stands for is shitty, but in actuality she opening eyes to people making mistakes all over the Internet. She's doing good, see that

The last time I said anything about Laci Green was over 2 years ago. So like, I already left her alone. 2 years ago.

Buuuut doing good work doesn’t get you off the hook for saying something shitty, and she should expect that she’s going to get called out for it - especially as a public figure with a lot of influence.
